Why Families Choose EXPLORE Pediatrics’ Forest Adventure Groups as an after school program
As a pediatric occupational therapist and the owner of EXPLORE Pediatric Therapy, I spend a lot of time listening to families. I hear about long school days, overwhelmed children, overstimulated parents, busy schedules, and the desire to choose activities that truly support their child’s well-being, rather than something just fill another hour of the week.
EXPLORE Pediatrics’ Forest Adventure Groups were created in direct response to what families and children actually need. After spending 2 decades studying the research, and working in the field, we took all of the supporting data and created this program.
These groups are not just “outdoor time” or another extracurricular. They are intentionally designed experiences that support the whole child (emotionally, socially, physically, and developmentally.)
Here are the most common reasons families choose EXPLORE’s Forest Adventure Groups.
1. Your child needs to decompress after a long school day
Many children come home from school overstimulated, exhausted, or emotionally flooded. Even children who appear to “hold it together” during the school day often crash once they get home. We know that this is because the environment creates an overstimulated brain, but an under moved body. The result is dysregulation.
Our Forest Adventure Groups provide a calming and restorative transition out of the hectic school day and non stop demands. With us, children are encouraged to move their bodies, breathe fresh air, and reconnect with themselves in a natural environment. This outdoor time helps regulate the nervous system and offers a true reset after a full day of learning, listening, and performing.
Parents often tell us they notice fewer meltdowns, improved mood, and smoother evenings. It is not just play; it is a necessary pause for an exhausted brain.
Researchers tell us to build in opportunities like this regularly. This type of reset is essential in building life skills, people skills and executive function skills that actually matter in the real world. Researchers tell us that this type of environment is the most important, far more than achieving straight A’s on a report card.
2. You want more than another screen-based or overly competitive activity
Many families are intentionally stepping away from activities that feel pressure-filled, performance-based, or centered around screens. They are looking for enrichment that supports well-being, creativity, and connection.
Our Forest Adventure Groups are rooted in play, exploration, imagination, and curiosity. There is no scoreboard. There is no comparison. Children are encouraged to be themselves while still learning essential life skills, and while having FUN!
This is where self-awareness begins through movement, choice, and meaningful experiences rather than external rewards or expectations. Our team of specialists bring an incredibly unique perspective to every week. They are experts at reading the “room”, and knowing how to meet each child where they are at emotionally.
3. Your child struggles with confidence or peer interactions
Social skills are not built through lectures or worksheets. They are rarely developed through adult-direction. Instead, they develop through real, shared experiences with peers. And they take frequent practice to develop.
In our weekly Forest Adventure Groups, children practice collaboration, communication, leadership, and problem solving in natural, low-pressure situations. Whether they are building together, navigating group decisions, or resolving small conflicts, they are developing the people skills that matter most.
Over time, children begin to trust themselves more. They find their voice. They build confidence through doing, not being told how to act. These experiences lay the foundation for authentic friendships and long-term social success.
4. You value experiences that support emotional and developmental growth
Our groups are intentionally designed and led by pediatric specialists who understand child development. Every activity has purpose, even when it looks like simple play.
Through nature-based experiences, children are strengthening emotional regulation, motor coordination, attention, resilience, and self-awareness. These skills are essential for learning, relationships, and independence and they develop best when children feel safe, engaged, and connected.
This is play with a deeper purpose.
5. You want an extracurricular that truly supports the whole child
Forest Adventure Groups support physical health, emotional regulation, social growth, confidence, and independence all at the same time. We know through research that physical health IS the best antidote to mental health challenges.
Children leave feeling capable, connected, and proud of themselves. They leave feeling more regulated because their bodies received the input needed to feed the brain.
Parents choose EXPLORE because our programs support who their child is becoming, not just how they perform.
At EXPLORE Pediatrics, we believe childhood should be filled with movement, connection, and meaningful experiences. Our Forest Adventure Groups exist because children needs spaces where they can grow into themselves and be supported, understood, and free to explore
